How to Drink Poison

Screenprint of the words "Lies/Lies/Lies 24/7" on a black background printed in neon pink and blue.

Neon colors are both alarming and seductive because they help create and advertise ideas and things that are better than reality. It’s the trick of alienation – representing another state of mind and consciousness. It’s meant to invite and lure you, but it’s literally a bright front to something figuratively darker inside. Media & technology (and the constant blue-neon light emanating from our devices) characterizes contemporary culture but prevents many of us from fully seeing and understanding the power of what we succumb to. It’s easy to ignore and forget the surveillance from an illicit marketplace where our identities are bought, stalked, and sold, in favor of convenience and enjoyment.

Media & technology (and the constant blue-neon light emanating from our devices) characterizes contemporary culture, but prevents many of us from fully seeing and understanding the power of what we succumb to. It’s easy to ignore and forget the surveillance from an illicit marketplace where our identities are bought, stalked, and sold, in favor of convenience and enjoyment - as we never look at just one thing. We are always looking at the relation between things and ourselves. Simmons reminds us that if how we see is determined by what we know, believe, and have been taught, then not seeing or what we chose to β€œnot see” is also a reflection of these conditions.
